| | The Rev. Dr. Raymond A. Cuthbert
Just before his thirteenth birthday, Raymond A. Cuthbert decided that he was called into the vocation of ministry, and his preparations for that vocation continued through a Bachelor of Arts degree (1976) program at the University of Winnipeg (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada), and both a Masters of Divinity degree (1979) and a Doctor of Ministry degree (1989) at Christian Theological Seminary (Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S.A.).
Ray was the Canadian Disciples delegate to the WCC Sixth Assembly in Vancouver in 1983, and he was honoured to be elected by the Assembly to serve on the WCC Central Committee (1983-1990).
Following Ray's service on the WCC Central Committee, he was asked to serve on the WCC's Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA) from 1992-1998. In 2003, he was asked by the Council on Christian Unity to be the Disciples' representative to the Lutheran World Federation's Tenth Assembly, and did so.
Ray's experience with the WCC taught him several lessons that could be put to good use in local congregations. For example, when Ray was called to serve as the pastor of Home Street Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 1984, the congregation was predominantly Filipino. Ray found an interpreter in the congregation who translated his sermons on a weekly basis from English into Tagalog, for distribution to those members who had difficulty with English. Ray had learned in the WCC setting that the speaker's intonation and expression could be gathered by the live preaching in one language while following a manuscript translation in another language.
From 1997 to present, Ray has served as the founding minister at Broadway Disciples United Church, a woven congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Canada. Broadway is an ecumenical, multi-ethnic, intergenerational congregation. This congregation's members are all fully members of both denominations. The church's building is located prominently - directly across the street from Manitoba's Legislative Building in downtown Winnipeg.
